Residents in a County Durham town have reacted angrily after the announcement that another bank branch will close later this year – leaving just one banking facility in the area.

People living in Consett have taken exception to Barclays branch revealing that they’ll be leaving the town in September 2022 – due to most customers moving only over the last two years.

According to the banking group, 90 per cent of people in Consett are using other types of banking, like online and telephone, and that only 13 people exclusively used the branch for their banking.

A statement from Barclays about the closure read: “Customers using other ways to do their banking has increased by 13 per cent since 2016, in the past 12 months, 3 per cent of this branch's customers have been using nearby branches, and we’ve identified that only 13 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking.”

The shock closure news from Barclays follows on from Halifax and Co-op bank also announcing that their branches there would be closing over the last three years.

It also indicates that there will only be one bank, Lloyds, left in Consett after September 21; the day that Barclays closes its doors.

Despite Barclays telling customers that there will still be Barclays branches open in Prudhoe (9.7 miles away) and Team Valley (11.7 miles away), some have reacted angrily to the closure.

Taking to social media, one disgruntled Facebook user said: “It’s ridiculous, Consett is a fast-growing town and we have a lot of elderly people who like to use face-to-face banking and we’ll have no banks soon,” while another added: “I’m not sure what my parents are going to do, they can't use the internet and can't travel if the only options are Newcastle or Durham.”
