An explosion is planned for later today as part of demolition work on a former steelworks site.

Work is ongoing to demolish the existing structures at Teesworks, on the site of the former Redcar steelworks.

Another explosion is planned for 7pm tonight.

A section of Sinter Plant is due to be flattened by explosives as part of the demolition programme.

A spokesperson for the Tees Valley Combined Authority said: “As part of demolition programme, a section of Sinter Plant will be flattened by explosives

“Photography and film will be shared following the blowdown.
“Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

2022 has been billed by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen as the year of construction. A series of explosions to bring down the blast furnace are expected to take place during the summer. 

When the steelworks were operational, the Sinter Plant was used to process raw materials to create nodules for use in the blast furnace.

Work to demolish the building is already underway.
