A NORTH EAST man has made his first appearance in Crown Court charged with the murder of a 40-year-old man.

Raymond Whincup is accused of killing Mark Robinson following a violent attack almost two years ago.

Mr Robinson was the victim of a serious assault at a property in Station Road, Redcar, in July 2020.

He suffered a head injury and required lengthy hospital treatment and then full-time care until he sadly passed away on August 5, 2021.

In July 2020, two men, aged 33 and 45, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting Mr Robinson. They were both released under investigation.

Following his death last year, Mr Robinson's family described him as 'a much-loved son, brother and uncle and treasured by our whole family. We cannot describe how difficult the past year has been and we are all devastated by Mark’s death'.

Whincup, who appeared via videolink from Durham Prison, was given a provisional trial date of November 15.

It is estimated that the trial will last for two weeks.

The 35-year-old was remanded in custody.
