A BRAND new rooftop bar promising incredible views of aircraft taking off and landing has been unveiled for the first time.

The highly-anticipated "Sky Bar" at Teesside Airport is today (June 8) throwing its doors open after several months in the planning.

The new venue, which will open to members of the public, is situated inside the terminal building and offers views of the runway.

Ahead of its opening, The Northern Echo had a sneak peek inside to see what to expect and why bosses think it will be a roaring success.

Plans for the new attraction were first revealed last year as The Echo reported the rooftop viewing platform would return.

At the time, bosses also confirmed plans for a never-seen-before bar, featuring unrivalled views which were last night branded incredible.

Teesside Airshow: What time does it start and what will be on

Phil Forster, Managing Director at Teesside Airport, said: "The way the bar has been received is fabulous.

"One thing we know is people on Teesside love to have a soft drink or an alcoholic drink.

"And we know people love this airport and they want to support it - and people want to be able to see the aircraft.

"You'll be able to see great views, not just of the runway, but of the fabulous Roseberry Topping and who doesn't want to see that."

With capacity for around 60 people, the bar set to serve up beers and spirits from local breweries, while offering a mix of hot and cold drinks.

It is situated in the departures area with the entrance near the check-in desks meaning anyone can visit, even if they are not travelling.

This is similiar to The Landside Cafe which is located near the entrance of the terminal building and remains open to the public.

The Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Last year we overhauled our terminal to make it even better for the thousands of new passengers we’ve welcomed as part of our bigger and better 2022 summer season but we didn’t stop there, and are now improving our facilities for the general public too."

The opening comes as work is progressing on the outdoor viewing platform, which will be accessible from the sky bar when it opens later this year.

Mr Houchen added: “We’re already seeing more and more people from the local community and businesses popping into the Landside Café and this, combined with our new soon-to-be-open viewing platform, will provide another real draw for visitors.”
