A COLLISION between a horse wagon and a van on the A66 near Brough on Monday (June 6) caused traffic chaos on the A-road this morning and led to a three-mile traffic tailback.

Cumbria Police and crews from the North West Ambulance Service attended the scene of the incident at around 8.15am this morning to reports that a bow top being pulled by two horses had collided with a wagon near North Stainmore.

After attending the crash, officers from the police force closed off the A66 westbound until 10.30am – which caused queues of up to 30 minutes, leaving some drivers stranded in their cars and unable to take alternate local routes.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: “Police were contacted at around 8:15am today to the report of a road traffic collision involving a bow top being pulled by two horses and a wagon on A66 near North Stainmore.

“Three passengers in the bow top suffered minor injuries. One of the horses died as a result of the collision.

“The driver of the wagon was uninjured.”
