THIS brilliant picture shows the decorations going up in Forster Street, Darlington, for the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The picture features in the exhibition that is on until the bank holiday in Darlington library of local programmes, brochures, documents and photos of royal visits, events and occasions, including, of course, jubilees as far back to those of Queen Victoria. There are also lots of pictures of Darlington in the 1950s. The exhibition runs inside the hoardings which now cover the library each day from 10am to 4pm.

Forster Street is behind North Lodge Park. The street is probably named after the Liberal politician WE Forster (1818-1886), who was a Quaker and served an apprenticeship at Peases’ mill in Darlington.

Every house in the terrace has lost these original windows, so it is impossible to locate where the picture was taken – unless anyone can explain the glazed noticeboard on the left hand side.

The Northern Echo: The Northern Echo's 1953 Coronation supplement

ON THIS DAY 69 YEARS AGO

THE country was gearing up for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, which was held on June 2, 1953. So this weekend 69 years ago, The Northern Echo carried a special supplement (above) looking forward to the great day and telling the life story of the new monarch. This gives us another chance to remind you that on Thursday, the Echo is publishing another special supplement which looks at 70 years of the Queen’s visits to the North East (below)
