THREE men were arrested after they were caught on a security camera as they left the scene of an alleged burglary in Bishop Auckland early this morning (May 23).

A Durham Police spokesperson said officers from Bishop Auckland D Relief response were called to reports of a burglary at the O2 phone shop on Newgate Street at 3.40am.

They were alerted to the break in by staff from The Auckland Project security team who observed three men on camera leaving the premises.

The spokesperson said: “A team of officers were deployed to the area who conducted a thorough search for the suspects and also identified a parking meter on North Bondgate which had also been tampered with.

“They also spoke with witnesses near to the scene who provided valuable information which led the officers in the direction of the suspects.

“After trawling through CCTV, officers were able to identify the suspects and detained them at a nearby known address.”

Two men, aged 43, and a third man, aged 47, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and remain in police custody.
