CONSTRUCTION work to build a new link road and cycle path near a North East airport is underway.

A new link road will be created to boost connectivity between Teesside Airport and its £200million new business park.

Workers are now on-site stripping the topsoil for the road, which will stretch around 2km from a new roundabout close to Wilkinson’s Plant Centre on the A67 to the business park.

A new footpath and cycleway will also improve access for pedestrians and cyclists to the facilities, with four units covering 130,000sq ft set to be created along a through-road in the first phase of airport works.

Temporary traffic management operations will be in place for short periods of time, with the road due to be complete in spring 2023.

The new business park, located on 270 acres of land at the south side of the airport, is expected to create up to 4,400 jobs when fully operational, made up of 1.9million sq ft of logistics, distribution, and industrial buildings.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “These past few weeks have seen full planes of passengers taking off from Teesside as part of the airport’s biggest and best summer season for years, and now work’s getting started on our land development too, with this road literally paving the way for the new southside business park.

“When we brought the airport back into public ownership and saved it from closure, it included 817 acres of land primed for development and opportunity. Brilliant businesses such as Draken are already growing and creating new good-quality, well-paid jobs on the site and there’s scope for many, many more, especially thanks to its Teesside Freeport status.

“Teesside Airport is not just giving people a great start to their well-deserved breaks, it’s also helping to drive forward investment, boosting our businesses and working for people right across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.”

A new multimillion-pound freight cargo facility has also been established as part of a wider programme of development at the airport.
