A woman is fighting for her life after a serious two-car collision on A1(M) near Durham in the early hours of this morning. Here is what we know so far:
• The woman was a passenger in a Ford Kuga that collided with the VW Golf near junction 62 for Durham.
• The alarm was raised at 1.15am and emergency services closed the northbound carriageway to traffic.
• A fire service spokesman said the woman suffered potentially ‘life changing injuries’.
• It is understood she was taken to the RVI in Newcastle.
• The three other occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were treated at University Hospital North Durham.
• A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.
• The road was closed for 11 hours and re-opened just after noon on Sunday.
• Durham Constabulary has confirmed an investigation is underway.
• Witnesses are asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident reference 37 of May 22.
