SUNDERLAND fans have reacted with jubilation after the Black Cats finally won promotion from League One.
Wearside is currently celebrating after Sunderland’s triumph over Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off final at Wembley this afternoon.
Over 45,000 supporters cheered their side to victory at the national stadium in London, and many more back home watched the match in the city’s pubs.
Elliot Embleton’s long-range strike set Sunderland on their way in the 12th minute, with Ross Stewart hitting a low finish in the 79th minute to secure the win.
Tonight, city landmarks including Keel Square, the Northern Spire, Fulwell Mill, Hylton Castle and the Cliffe Park lighthouse will remain lit in the club red and white colours to honour the team's success.
Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller said: "Excellent. “This result is great news for all fans and good for the city as it gives everyone a lift, especially with the challenges we’ve all been facing and continuing to face outside of football.
"It’s very deserving for the club and everyone who has resolutely continued to show their support.
“We can stand prouder today as we enter a new chapter for our city’s proud footballing traditions."
Coun Miller said: "I think, as well as thanking the team for all their hard work and everyone behind the scenes at SAFC, we should also applaud the thousands of fans who made their way to Wembley and everyone else who tuned in for the match.
"And, commiserations to Wycombe. Best wishes to you for the next season."
