AS the weather begins to turn warmer, the days become longer and we see more sunshine – we’ve pulled together the top 10 pubs in a popular tourist destination.

A number of high performing venues have proved a hit with reviewers on TripAdvisor in the coastal town of Whitby, North Yorkshire. 

From pubs, micropubs and those who offer a place for our little furry friends, these establishments all have one thing in common, they've all received top marks.

Thousands of reviews between all ten venues have been left on the reviewing platform, backing up their extremely high rating.

Here are the top 10 pubs in Whitby according to their TripAdvisor ratings.

1. Whitby Brewery, East Cliff, Whitby

Kicking things off is this Whitby pub which has been praised for its “lovely atmosphere” by reviewers.

According to the pub’s website, it started as a microbrewery in 2013 with an aim to bring local, craft brewing back to Whitby

The pub now produces Yorkshire ale, which they say has been “a hit in the local pubs.”

Securing itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, the pub has now become number one of 18 for nightlife in Whitby according to TripAdvisor.

The venue has received 194 five-star reviews and 62 four-star reviews out of a total of 277 reviews.

One person said: “Loved the atmosphere (and the beer). Lovely sunny afternoon and had a few chats with total strangers…mostly dog related.

“A welcome change of scenery from the bustle of the town. Bought a souvenir pint glass to remember the day.”

2. The Waiting Room, Whitby Station, Langborne Road, Whitby

This pub is in fact, a “micropub”, and, according to the TripAdvisor description, the atmosphere goes back to “a time when people talked to each other for entertainment.”

The Waiting Room offers “an ever-changing range of beers, ciders and fine wines” and prides itself on an environment with “no TVs or background music.”

Scoring 139 five-star reviews and 17 four-star reviews out of a total of 164 reviews, the pub is very highly rated.

One person said: “One room, right on the railway station site, selling craft beer and cider and a few other drinks. No food apart from crisps. Lovely atmosphere and we really enjoyed tasting the ciders and beers and seeing the locals.

3. Arch and Abbey, Skinner Street, Whitby

Another “micropub” on our list is Arch and Abbey, which sells four rotating real ales, six real ciders, craft beer plus 50 bottled and canned beers, 50 Yorkshire gins and spirits and a selection of wine.

The pub also offers tea, coffee and homemade cake for those looking for a more relaxed evening.

Another pub that prides itself on “no music or TVs” and, according to its description on TripAdvisor, offers a friendly welcoming atmosphere, and dogs are friendly as well.

The venue has secured itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers Choice Award and has received 79 five-star reviews and 13 four-star reviews out of 100 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Cracking real ale "micropub", but actually quite large. Good selection of cask and keg ales.

“Friendly staff and smart decoration, although I recommend to bring a coat as it was freezing, even with the small heaters on (was a quiet mid week day so will be warmer when fuller!)”

4. The Quirky Den, Grape Lane, Whitby

The Quirky Den has been praised for its “great choice of drinks” and its “cosy” ambience by reviews and ranks number four of 18 nightlife venues in Whitby.

The venue is another micropub and has scored itself 60 five-star reviews and eight four-star reviews out of a total of 72 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Lovely drinks with friends on a weekend trip to Whitby with the girls. Lovely friendly landlord and landlady. Fab choice of gins and rums. Worth a visit, will definitely go back.

Another person said: “We visited the pub Friday 15th and was made very welcome by the owners. Great choice of beers and a great atmosphere. We will be back soon when in Whitby.

5. The Station Inn, New Quay Road, Whitby

This Whitby pub has ranked number 5 out of 18 for nightlife in Whitby, according to TripAdvisor and has been praised for its “friendly staff” and “excellent atmosphere.”

Securing itself a TripAdvisor 2021 Travellers’ Choice Award, this Whitby pub has scored 129 five-star reviews and 61 four-star reviews out of a total of 210 reviews.

One person said: “What a lovely pub! great atmosphere, great live music and the best bunch of staff! Definitely recommend!”

Another person added: “Lovely place to go for a drink, staff are always friendly and helpful. Regular live music and always a good atmosphere.”

6. The Little Angel, Flowergate, Whitby

This CAMRA award-winning venue is a dog-friendly cask ale pub with “great entertainment” according to its TripAdvisor description.

It also offers visitors a range of homemade burgers and pub food and has described itself as a “proper pub.”

The venue has secured itself 101 five-star reviews and 52 four-star reviews out of a total 185 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Great little boozer and very friendly staff. Had a warm welcome from them. Good and well-priced drinks. Dog friendly to which I think most of Whitby is."

7. The Fleece, Church Street, Whitby

This Whitby pub has been praised for its “lovely staff,” and its “fantastic value,” by reviewers.

Offering customers a snug and a real fire to keep them warm, the venue has secured 51 five-star reviews and 31 four-star reviews out of 100 reviews altogether.

One person said: “Called in for an early afternoon drink whilst visiting Whitby for the day. It was midweek, so pretty quiet probably about a dozen people in.

“This suited us as we had our little puppy with us and she’d had enough of crowds of people as Whitby was incredibly busy.

“Served by a friendly and helpful guy, the beers were good, and with the real fire blazing away, we could have happily stayed for a few hours longer!

“We’re back to the area at start of Dec, so now we know it’s dog friendly will definitely call in again.”

8. The Ship Inn, Marine Parade, Whitby

This pub has ranked ninth out of 18 for nightlife in Whitby according to TripAdvisor, and reviewers have praised its “friendly staff” and “lovely gin selection.”

The Ship Inn has secured itself 38 five-star reviews and 14 four-star reviews out of a total of 63 reviews altogether.

One person said: “If you’re wanting to enjoy a few drinks in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere then head to The Ship. If you’re lucky enough to grab a table at the front of the pub the views are brilliant. Great for people watching too.

“Friendly staff, plenty of choice of good priced drinks. Lots of different gins. It’s dog friendly too.”

9. The Granby, Skinner Street, Whitby

Securing 19 five-star reviews and 14 four-star reviews out of a total of 40 reviews, this Whitby pub is another much-loved venue for the town.

Although the pub has some less positive reviews, most people have praised its “good food” and “value for money.”

One person said: “Busy but friendly pub. Always a good atmosphere. Good service behind the bar. Didn't eat but meals looked good.”

10. The Stiddy, High Street, Whitby

Finally on our list at number 10 is The Stiddy, although this pub hasn’t received many reviews (only 8) every one of them has been 5-stars.

Reviewers have praised the friendly staff and “fabulous” service, as well as a “good range of alcohol.”

One person said: “Found the Pub on CAMRA app during a stay in Sandsend. Went on Friday night and what a gem.

“Great food at a decent price and 2 Hand-pulled beers, which were kept spot on.

“Owners were really friendly and made us welcome. There was live music on during our visit which was a bonus.”
