SECURITY is under review at a Teesside health trust after a car smashed into a hospital reception.

Nobody was hurt last month when a vehicle hit the entrance of Middlesbrough’s Roseberry Park. But the incident has sparked leaders at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS mental health trust to take a look at their security arrangements.

Papers for last month’s TEWV board showed how the front doors were damaged – and how police and trust site teams sprung into action. The report stated: “All staff who witnessed the incident or who were in close vicinity were spoken to and offered support by senior managers on call, who also contacted supervisors of all staff at the scene to make them aware of the support offered.”

It added: “Immediate action was taken to clear glass and debris from the scene and the entrance boarded up safely and securely. Alternative access for patients and families is in place.”

The chief executive report also showed inpatient ward safety reviews had now been updated – with security bosses taking a fresh look at arrangements in the wake of what happened. After the board meeting, a trust spokesperson confirmed TEWV was reviewing its security arrangements alongside the police.

The trust said repairs to the reception area doors are now underway – with access to the site available via a temporary entrance. Stockton’s Evan Paul Hindmarsh, 20, is accused of driving a vehicle into the Marton Road site.

He was charged with criminal damage, driving a motor vehicle dangerously and possession of a class B drug. Mr Hindmarsh, of Rosthwaite Avenue, Roseworth, is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, May 11.
