THE reason a major North East leisure complex has been closed since last week has finally been revealed as rumours and speculation has mounted.

The Gate in Newcastle has been completely shut down since Thursday (May 5) after "safety concerns" were identified by venue bosses.

At the time, customers and staff reported being evacuated from the three-story complex as many were in the process of enjoying a meal or watching a film.

Those caught up in the evacuation on Thursday evening expressed worry as they were left waiting outside only to be told the venue would remain closed for the foreseeable.

Since then, the leisure complex and car parks have remained shuttered, prompting much speculation with some suggesting there are problems with the structure.

Many have also taken to social media to complain over diner reservations and Cineworld cancellations as a result of the sudden closure.

Meanwhile, venue bosses have not publicly commented on the cause.

But today (May 10), the cause of the closure was finally revealed as it was confirmed the sudden closure was down to fire prevention equipment.

It was confirmed that the whole complex was shut down to allow the team to carry out "further testing" of the internal mechanisms that prevent a fire from spreading.

This was to ensure that such mechanisms meet the highest standard of fire safety, which The Gate has stated throughout has been "precautionary."

An investigation into this is continuing, meaning the whole leisure complex has remained closed for a fifth day.

The Gate said: "We remain in close dialogue with those affected and will be supporting everyone as we work to re-open as soon as it is safe and practical to do so."

Following the closure, a number of operators moved to reassure its customers left unable to use the facilities.

A spokesperson for Pizza Hut said: "Due to potential health and safety concerns at The Gate complex, we're temporarily closing our restaurant while investigations take place.

"The health and safety of our employees and customers is our utmost priority. We apologise for any inconvenience and plan to reopen once we're told it is safe to do so.

"In the meantime, we ask customers to enjoy a meal at our closest Hut at Gateshead Metro Centre or Gateshead Metro Retail Park to continue enjoying their favourite pizzas."
