VOTERS are heading to polling stations today (Thursday May 5) to elect councils across the North East. Not every council in the region is up for election but the following are;
- Hartlepool
- Sunderland
- North Yorkshire
- Newcastle
- Gateshead
- North Tyneside
- South Tyneside
Polls close at 10pm, with the first batch of results likely to be announced at midnight and the last at the weekend.

Hartlepool and Sunderland
The results for Hartlepool Borough Council and Sunderland City Council elections are expected around 2am on Friday (May
North Yorkshire
Results for North Yorkshire County Council elections are expected around 5pm on Friday (May 6).
Newcastle
Newcastle City Council’s election results are expected around 11:30pm tonight (Thursday May 5).

Gateshead
The count for Gateshead Council will not take place overnight and results are expected to be announced on Friday afternoon.
North Tyneside
North Tyneside Council is expected to declare the results for the first ward around midnight tonight (Friday May 6).
South Tyneside
The count for South Tyneside Council's seats beginning at 10pm. The first ward is expected to be declared at 11.45pm.
