In a statement, the force said: "We’re currently on the scene of a collision on Woodland Road, in #Darlington.

"The road has been closed in both directions and is likely to remain closed for several hours to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

"Please avoid the area and find an alternative route.

"The driver of the lorry has been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

"The road remains closed to allow collision investigators to work at the scene.

"We’d ask motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area and find an alternative route."

The road has been blocked off to the public and the pavement on both sides of the road are inaccessible from where St Teresa's Hospice is.

Pedestrians on their way into the town centre are asked to walk via the hospital and Reid Street.
