A MAN has died after a fatal fire at a cemetery in North East.

Here is what we know so far.

Where and when was the alarm raised?

Firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were called to Ushaw Moor Cemetery at 6.08am on Thursday morning to reports of a fire.

They have since confirmed, along with police, that a man died at the scene, despite the best efforts of emergency services to save him.

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire Service said: "We were alerted at 6.08am this morning (Thursday, April, 28) to reports of a fire in a cemetery on Broom Lane, Ushaw Moor.

"CDDFRS control mobilised two crews to the scene. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, a man was very sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.”

Officers believe he had been reported missing to them and have informed his family and loved ones.

They are preparing a report for the coroner so an inquest can be held to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A force spokeswoman said: “Sadly a man was found deceased at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to confirm his identity but officers believe it to be that of a missing man and his family are in the process of being notified.

“It is not believed there are any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

“No graves have been affected.

“The cemetery will be closed for the remainder of today but is expected to reopen tomorrow and we would like to thank the public for their patience.”

What has North East Ambulance Service said?

A spokeswoman said: "We were called to an incident at Ushaw Moor cemetery at 6.19am this morning.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, but are unable to provide any further comment."

What have local people said about the incident?

The cemetery has been closed to members of the public today and a police cordon is in place.

One woman said: "My brother came down at 6am to get a newspaper and he told my mum there has been a commotion.

"My father-in-law's grave is down there and I go every day to check the flowers with the dog but I can't go today.

"My brother said that the grass cutter said the man who comes in to collect the rubbish found him but I don't know. It's horrendous."
