Are you ready to hang the bunting, butter the scones and wave the flags for Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee? We’re inviting you to be a part of the celebrations across the extended June Bank Holiday weekend and help to mark this historic occasion in style!
Plans and preparations have been underway behind the scenes to bring a huge selection of events to Darlington. From films and live broadcasts to dancing and live music, there truly is something for the whole family.
We’ll be launching our weekend-long party on Thursday 2nd June, starting with a stream of Trooping of the Colour on our town centre big screen. Our Town Crier, Peter Stemmer, will hundreds of other Criers, and Pearly Kings and Queens across the country in announcing a proclamation heralding the lighting of the beacons in the evening. No party is complete without music, so we’ll play host to several bands and artists throughout the afternoon, followed by a showing of Mary Poppins.
Across Friday, you can pull up a deckchair to see the Cockerton Prize Silver Band play or one of the many tribute artists. Covering UB40, Amy Winehouse, Coldplay and Artic Monkeys, it’ll be just like the big names themselves are playing to our market place! It’s set to be a fantastic line up and is perfect for fans of all music genres. If you’re looking for family entertainment, Saturday is the day for you. We’ll have a range of family-friendly performances, like a kids’ disco hour and 1950s rhythm & blues party band, The Revolutionaires, as well as face painting, giant colouring in, workshops and so much more.
Not only will we have this incredible array of events in the town centre, we’re inviting everyone to hold neighbourhood celebrations on Sunday for The Big Jubilee Lunch. We want to see our residential streets lined with colour, food and smiling faces! Why not dig out some crafting bits and pieces to make your own crowns? Or see if you can make a feast fit for a Queen with only red, white and blue food? Make sure you tag us in your photos so we can see how you’re celebrating.
Our town has also been adorned in beautiful shades of green in the lead up to the Jubilee with the Queen’s Green Canopy. Thousands of trees have been planted as part of the scene as a thank you to The Queen for her exceptional service and to promote the importance of trees to the environment. Take a mindful moment away from the hustle and bustle of the parties to visit the planting sites, and see the amazing work the volunteers have done.
There’s so much going on and so many ways for you to enjoy yourself over the extended Bank Holiday weekend. We can’t wait for you all to join in and we hope you’re just as excited too. This is a historic moment, so come and share it with us!
