NEW pictures show the scene in Saltburn this evening after a huge emergency service presence responded to a car that had "left the road" and travelled onto a North East beach injuring four people.

Police and ambulance vehicles are at the scene at Saltburn beach after an Audi reportedly drove onto the beach this evening.

The area has been cordoned off by police while it is understood the car came to a rest on the beach near to the Promenade and Pier.

A man has since been arrested while two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement, Cleveland Police said: "Emergency services are currently at Saltburn, after four people were injured this evening when a car left the road and went onto the beach, near to the Pier.

"A man in his 70s has been arrested whilst officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We received reports at around 8.17pm, that a blue Audi had gone onto the beach near to the Promenade and Pier.

"Two women have been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries, and two other people have minor injuries which didn't require immediate treatment."

An investigation is now underway and an immediate appeal for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage has been launched by the force.
