THERE is a huge emergency service presence after a car "left the road" and travelled onto a beach injuring four people.

Police and ambulance vehicles are at the scene (10.02pm) in Saltburn after an Audi drove onto the beach and reportedly struck a number of people.

The area has been cordoned off by police while it is understood the car came to a rest on the beach near to the promenade and pier.

A man in his 70s has since been arrested while two women have been taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Witnesses in the area describe the car being stuck in the sea after travelling across the sand during the incident.

The main road to and from the area, Saltburn Bank has been closed to all traffic by police.

In a statement this evening, Cleveland Police said: "Emergency services are currently at Saltburn, after four people were injured this evening when a car left the road and went onto the beach, near to the Pier.

"A man in his 70s has been arrested whilst officers investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"We received reports at around 8.17pm, that a blue Audi had gone onto the beach near to the Promenade and Pier.

"Two women have been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries, and two other people have minor injuries which didn't require immediate treatment."

Investigation has been launched 

An investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the events this evening.

An immediate appeal for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage has also been launched by the force.

Those who may have any information or footage relating to the incident should phone 101 and ask for Cleveland Police.
