OWNERS of a popular jewellery and interior décor store have celebrated their move to a bigger and better premises next door.

Moon now occupies a prominent place on Durham’s busy Silver Street, with a large frontage displaying its attractive offer.

Owners Jo and Mark Soulsby run Moon in Durham for seven years, after starting their business in Shotley Bridge.

Jo said: "We are trying to support individual artists and small businesses, so it’s a nice variety of products.

"We have over 90 artists working with us, from the region and over the world specialising in different techniques, different metals and materials.

"We also do workshops so we actually have things happening on the premises as well, so you can do different things.

The Northern Echo:

"We try to work a little ahead of a time with retail because retail is going through a transformation.

"You cannot just open a door these days and say we are a shop, because people are not excited about it any more.

"You have to be ahead of the time and offer customer the experience they cannot purchase online."

Jo added: "We started with just jewellery and we had a premises, which was a little bare and we thought that adding all these pieces by different artists would increase our offer.

"That was Mark’s department – we split it between us. And then it just grew. At the beginning we only had a few bits and bobs and now we have a shop full of all these exciting items."

Jo said it was very much a husband and wife team and she joked their eight-year-old son is in training.

She said: "We have all this beautiful frontage now, so we can display a lot more.

"The move has worked out really well because this gives us ‘more exposure’. We can do a lot more things on the premises as well.

"The amount of comments we have had from people have been amazing.

"We were setting up and painting and it was still a mess and a woman came in with qa bunch of flowers and said “I just wanted to say thank you because Durham needs it.

"It was very encouraging. It’s nice to have support from the community as well."

The couple first set up the business in Shotley Bridge about 10 years ago and moved to Durham in 2015.
