THE revelation that Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak will be fined for breaching Covid laws has split opinion, with some backing the pair while others have called for their immediate resignation.

Readers of The Northern Echo responded in their hundreds to the news, sharing their thoughts on what the future holds for Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak.

Commenters said the pair are “unfit to govern” and criticised their “lies” but some defenders urged people to “move on”.

Gemma Rigby said: “They should lose their jobs. They made the rules and then broke them. They showed absolute contempt for the public and its unforgivable in my opinion.”

Ricky Lee Beadle added: “Boris is a mug telling us to stay at home and he partied he shut be asked to stand down.”

Lee Spencer said the pair should be removed from office. “So they have broken the law, for which they set for everyone else to follow, they should be removed from power,” he said. “I'm sure if a policeman got a covid fine he’d face disciplinary action.”

‘Total disdain’

John Tempest commented: “They have a total disdain for the electorate and have taken the British public for total fools.”

Commenting on Facebook, Andrew Smith highlighted how Johnson and Sunak lied to the public “repeatedly” over partygate. He said: “They lied to parliament and to the public, repeatedly, so they should both resign.”

And Stephen Hutchinson also highlighted the pair’s lies as a key factor.

“The parties were relatively trivial but the escalating lies and misleading Parliament means they should go,” he commented.

“Their privileged positions are ones of trust and integrity, they now have neither. We are faced with massive domestic and international problems and these clowns were only interested in saving their careers. Bye.”

Meanwhile, Hamish McTavis succinctly said: “Unfit to govern. They need to go.”

A snap poll on The Northern Echo website asked readers whether they thought Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak should resign. From 728 votes, 65 per cent believed they should while 35 per cent said no.

And not everyone criticised the pair and called for their resignations, instead asking the public to “move on” from the scandal.

Brenda Jackson said: “Think there is more going on in the world to worry about than this”, while Stephen Shackleston added: “Lovely, now lets move on.”
