A FIRE station in County Durham has found a new lease of life after re-opening from a period of renovation that will now see firefighters share their base with ambulance crews.

Earlier this month, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service on-call firefighters joined paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service to attend a ‘new look’ Sedgefield Fire Station for an official opening of the newly refurbished building.

Cllr John Shuttleworth who officially opened the station, said: “The Combined Fire Authority’s vision for this refurbished community fire station in the heart of Sedgefield is one of state-of-the-art facilities and collaboration with our partners, so that both organisations can provide first-class facilities and services to support local people.”

The fire station, which is shared with NEAS, has recently undergone major construction work to improve the building and the facilities – and will now become a ‘focal point’ for the emergency services in Sedgefield.

Darren Green, head of operations (central) at NEAS, said: “When our fire service colleagues offered us accommodation at its new community station in Sedgefield, we saw this as an excellent opportunity to add Sedgefield as an additional base.

“We have a strong relationship with the fire service and the stations we share with them in other parts of the region have shown us that being co-located helps our teams get to know each other better in terms of knowledge and abilities, which makes us an even better team when we’re on scene together at an incident.

“I hope this new station will provide some additional comfort at a time when our crews have never been busier.”

Chief Fire Officer in County Durham and Darlington, Stuart Errington, added: “It’s been great to see such a fantastic turn out, and I really hope that our on-call firefighters and our colleagues at NEAS like the newly refurbished station.”
