A MAN suspected of carrying a knife in a Durham pub was 'tasered' by police as he was arrested.

Officers rushed to the city centre after bar staff raised the alarm at around 7.45pm on Saturday, April 2.

They said a man had been seen with a blade at the premises on Saddler Street.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “The call dispatcher sent officers into the city while CCTV continued to monitor the man who was seen leaving the pub and heading towards the Market Place.

“When officers arrived, they quickly identified the man who was standing in the square and stopped him so he could searched.

“The man resisted arrest causing officers to deploy a Taser.

“During the search, officers found a lock knife inside his pocket and discovered he was also wearing a stab proof vest.”

A 39-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possession of a bladed article and obstructing police.

He has since been charged with both offences and bailed to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates court on May 9.
