MANY parts of the region were hit with snow overnight – and many will see more snow and ice tomorrow.

A second yellow weather warning for ice in consecutive days has been put in place for the whole of the North East and North Yorkshire this evening.

More snow, hail, and ice is expected in the region in a sharp change of weather from last week.

The cold snap has replaced last week’s sunshine, with top temperatures across the UK set to be around 10C heading into the weekend.

A Met Office yellow weather warning for ice covering was extended on Thursday into Friday morning, and states that “snow and hail showers could lead to icy surfaces, with possible travel disruption”.

It also warns of the potential for “some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces”, and “probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths”.

The inclement weather also caused disruption on the roads as the A1 (M) in County Durham was closed for around three and a half hours on Thursday morning following a collision.

At around 4.30am, a HGV travelling southbound partially left the carriageway blocking lane one within a section of roadworks between Bowburn and Bradbury.
