THERE are currently over 400 homes in County Durham and Gateshead that are without power as snow and ice hits the region today (Wednesday March 30).

According to Northern Powergrid 410 homes in the North East are currently without power.

The news comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice expected to hit later tonight and into the early hours of the morning.

Snow has already began to fall in the region with parts of Durham seeing the white stuff as well as Darlington with more expected as the day goes on.

The full list of areas with power cuts in the North East:

  • NE11, 30 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 2.30pm today
  • SR2, 270 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 3.45pm
  • DH5 0QB, 30 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 2.45pm
  • SR8, 80 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 2.30pm

Met Office continue to predict further snowfall in Darlington and surrounding areas from 7pm tonight.

However, they have also issued a yellow warning for ice affecting much of the North East and North Yorkshire from 8pm tonight until 10am tomorrow.

According to the Met Office, “snow and hail showers could lead to icy surfaces” which may result in “possible travel disruption.”

The forecaster has warned that some icy patches on untreated roads and pavements may lead to increased chances of accidents and injuries.

Higher roads may also see snowfall, which would also result in longer journey times.
