POLICE say a man was left with stitches and serious injuries to his face after he was punched when he stopped to try and break up a fight.

The incident was reported at around 11pm on December 18 and saw a man who was walking down Collingwood Street, stop to break up a fight.

Another man, believed to be involved then proceeded to punch the victim leaving him with serious injuries to the face that required stitches.

Officer say a number of enquiries have been carried out and police are now appealing for any witnesses of the incident to come forward.

Police are looking to identify a man who was in the area at the time of the incident and may be able to assist officers with their investigation.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “The man, or anyone with information, is asked to call 101 or use the ‘Tell Us Something’ page on our website quoting crime number NP-20211218-1286.”
