IF you’ve ever wondered what happens to the lost property on public transport – wonder no more.

Everything found on the Metro in the North East in the last two years will be sold off this weekend for charity.

Nexus, who helps to operate the Metro routes, will take to Tynemouth Market this Sunday (March 20) between 9am and 3.30pm to sell off every piece of lost property that’s been found on Metros and buses since 2020.

While the unique sales might come as a surprise to many – the money made by the market stall will go towards a local charity.

With hundreds of items up for grabs, Nexus wants as many people to head to Tynemouth Market as possible, with new clothing, footwear, from slippers and leather shoes to ice skates, CDs, DVDs and computer games, headphones and helmets, jewellery and even Christmas crackers on offer.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to Nexus’ chosen charity of the year, Feeding Families, who provide emergency food parcels to struggling families across the North East.

Public affairs manager at Nexus, Lynne Robinson, said: “We’ve had a lot of success in previous years with our lost property auctions, and this time we’re taking the opportunity to join the traders at the successful Tynemouth Market.

“It’s great to think that the lost property can be put to such good use, and the funds raised will be welcomed by Feeding Families, who do great work across the North East.”

This isn’t the first time that a sale of lost property has taken place, after Nexus confirmed that it only holds onto lost items for six months before selling it.

Sales are cash only and any unsold items will be recycled or donated to charity.

Previous Metro lost property auctions have raised thousands of pounds for local charities.
