A HUGE crane was brought to the ground last night following a second attempt to demolish it.

Attempts had been made to pull down the ‘Goliath’ gantry crane at Able Middlesbrough Port on Sunday (March 6).

A crowd had gathered to watch an explosion earlier in the day, but it was unsuccessful in felling the huge structure.

The crane could be seen from across the Middlehaven area.

It was eventually destroyed at about 9.30pm on Sunday after further explosives were detonated.

A crowd gathered once again in the evening to watch the landmark as it came down.

This video by TeesPix, a Teesside-based photography team, shows the moment the crane crashed to the ground.

The crane has been redundant for some time.

A spokesman for the company said it "made sense" to demolish it and recyle the materials.

He added the structure had been fully surveyed prior to the demolition and there was no evidence of nesting activity - despite claims from members of the public that there was evidence of a peregrine falcon nest.

An Able spokesperson said: "As a responsible developer we are fully aware of our legal obligations with respect to nesting birds, including the special provisions for those listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

"The structure has been fully surveyed, this week, to establish whether any nesting activity was occurring at this time. The independent ecologist’s view was clear that there is no evidence of nesting activity and therefore no constraint to the proposed demolition."
