ENGLISH and Polish pupils are producing a bilingual book to help them understand each other's languages and cultures.

Professional artists and storytellers spent an afternoon at St John's RC School, in Bishop Auckland, working on ideas for the book with year eight students. The pupils listened to three tales from Michal Malinowski, director of the Warsaw Storyteller Museum, before drawing up an outline of their own plot with artist Rachel Clarke and storyteller Pascale Konyn.

Ms Clarke said: "There is a growing number of Polish students at the school and this will be something extra to help them with their English.

"The school does a lot to support the Polish children and this is something that will raise awareness of different cultures and celebrate this diversity by working together towards a single goal."

The book will be sent out to St John's feeder schools when it is completed in a few months.

Mr Malinowski was discussing his work with artists at Harehope Quarry, Frosterley, last night.
