THE first stage of the rejuvenation of a rundown part of Hartlepool has been completed.

Yesterday, the mayor, Stuart Drummond unveiled new homes in the town centre when he visited Trinity Square to see the transformation.

Built on land just off Hart Lane, in the Mildred and Mayfair streets area of the town, Trinity Square is the first of two residential developments to be created, comprising private ownership properties, housing for rent and shared-equity homes.

Mr Drummond said: "I have been involved with Hartlepool Revival since its inception, and it's a personal pleasure to be here to launch this fantastic new neighbourhood.

"This development was called for by the people of Hartlepool during the biggest consultation the town has ever seen. Literally every person was asked what they would like to happen with this area, and today we send out a clear message that we were listening and are delivering what they dreamed of."

During the five-year scheme, Hartlepool-based Yuill Homes will build 155 houses, as well as 13 Endeavour Housing Association bungalows and 21 shared-equity homes.

The redevelopment was driven by residents who campaigned for the project to breathe new life into the area.

Julie Bartholomew, one of the first residents, lived in one of the old homes, in Angus Street, for 23 years but has now moved into a new house with her 23-year-old son.

She said: "I've lots of decorating and organising to do, but once that is done, it will be fantastic."
