A WOMAN had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in the River Wear whilst trying to save her dog.

The owners of Barnaby the dog entered the River Wear at Shincliffe, County Durham after he jumped into the water to retrieve his ball.

But this made the situation worse as the pair got stuck

Luckily, Spennymoor Blue watch of the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service were quickly on hand to help.

A spokesman for the crew said: "Thankfully Barnaby and one of the owners managed to get out before the arrival of our crews, however one female remained in the river.

"Of course, our amazing crews got to work quickly and managed to rescue her.

"We understand situations like these are difficult, but if you ever find yourself in a similar scenario, please call 999.

"Our crews are trained in water rescue to help if you or your dog are in trouble in the water.

"Stay safe and stay out."
