A VETERANS support group is sending piles of clothes and toiletries to help people who have left Ukraine.

Darlington Veterans Community, which provides support to ex-armed forces personnel and their families in the Darlington area, collected a mountain of donations last year to give to Afghanistan refugees.

However, due to the quantity donated not all of it was needed.

The clothes and toiletries which were left over are now being diverted to Ukraine.

The Northern Echo:

Dan Smith, from Darlington, who set up the group, said the donations were going via Bishop Auckland businessman Jack Vincent, who is making the trip to the Polish border this week.

Mr Vincent plans to take a minibus full of ready to wear clothes of all ages and sizes, nappies and baby essentials, shoes, sanitary products, unlocked old mobile phones with chargers, jackets, lightweight pushchairs and pet food.

Mr Smith said: “We wanted to do something so we got in touch with Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form which are collecting for him and they are going to take the remainder of the things we couldn’t get to Afghan refugees.”
