PENSIONERS are being warned by police to be on their guard after conmen stole a 76-year-old woman's purse.

Posing as workmen, two men talked their way into their victim's home in the Dyke House area of Hartlepool, at around 5.50pm on Thursday.

While one of the men distracted the elderly victim, his accomplice searched her home.

Cleveland Police are worried the confidence tricksters will strike again.

PC Mark Doherty of Hartlepool Police said: "This type of crime is particularly cruel, as it can have a long-lasting effect on the victim.

"The elderly and the vulnerable can be left feeling frightened and cautious after being conned like this, and the experience of the thieves being inside of their home can leave them feeling violated.'' He is urging pensioners to check their callers are who they say they are before even considering letting them over the doorstep.

PC Doherty said: "If someone knocks at your door unexpectedly and tells you that they need to come into your home, always ask for identification.

"Don't be afraid to turn them away while you check up on them, if they are genuine callers, they won't mind waiting. If in doubt, keep them out."

The men who visited the Dyke House area are described as being in their late 30s or early 40s, both white and clean shaven. One of the men wore a black suit and a white shirt, and the other man, a grey suit and a white shirt. Both spoke with local accents.
