SNOW and Ice are set to hit parts of the region  as The Met Office has issued a yellow warning extending overnight.

The weather forecaster has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice for much of the North East and North Yorkshire in place from 8pm tonight until 9.30am in the morning.

According to the Met Office, wintery showers with snowfall will lead to ice surfaces making it difficult for travel conditions tonight.

Untreated roads will most likely become icy, as well as pavements and cycle routes, leading to increased chance to accidents and injuries.

Some raids and railways could be affected with longer journey times, particularly roads on higher grounds, the weather forecaster says.

Some areas could see up to 5cm of snow, however showers will become less widespread as the night goes on.

Looking ahead at the weather tomorrow, the Met Office have reported a “few showers around,” however most places will be dry by afternoon with sunny periods and lighter winds.

The outlook from Saturday to Monday sees a cold start but “a lot of dry weather,” things will become windier with spells of rain, however.

Monday will see heavy rain in places according to the weather forecaster.

The full long-range forecast reads: “Monday likely to start windy in the north, with the risk of gales or severe gales.

“A band of rain is likely to sink southwards through the day, becoming lighter as it does. The very start of March could see high pressure near, although there could still be some rain at times.

“The rest of this period is likely to see changeable conditions return, with many areas seeing a mixture of wet and dry weather as well as strong winds at times.

“Northern and western areas are most likely to see the heaviest rain with severe gales possible too, while the best of any dry and bright weather in the southeast.

“Overall, it is likely to be mild with a chance of brief colder incursions in the north."
