A GROUP of year nine pupils were even more animated than usual when an artist visited their school yesterday.

Artist and film-maker Sheryl Jenkins worked with youngsters at Bishop Barrington School Sports With Mathematics College, in Bishop Auckland, as part of a six-week project.

The group of teenagers were selected because of the progress they made in art during the past school year.

They are using digital photography and computer software to create a series of short animated films, starring themselves and clay models.

The theme is based around their local community and it is hoped that the sessions will help to encourage their interest in art.

Ms Jenkins, who is also working with youngsters at Etherley Lane Primary School, said: "I don't think animation is as complicated as people think.

"The sessions have been quite intensive, but already the children have been able to see a finished product.

"Hopefully, they will enjoy it and use the skills they learn for their art work and also different subjects."

Art teacher Jonathan Carney said: "Sheryl has been teaching them a lot of new skills and they all seem to be enjoying it and are working very hard."
