A PIONEERING awards scheme for North-East councils will announce its first shortlist tomorrow.
The shiNE awards, which are the first of their kind to be staged in the region, will recognise the achievements, performance and improvement of the region's 25 councils and four fire and rescue services.
The awards, organised by The Association of North-East Councils, will also help to improve the authorities' performance through encouraging sharing of ideas, knowledge and examples of best practice.
A total of 228 submissions were entered for ten award categories, with the inaugural shortlist announced tomorrow. Winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony in Gateshead on March 6.
The Northern Echo's Editor, Peter Barron, is one of the judges for the shiNE Awards, which are being sponsored by the Improvement Partnership for North East Local Government.
Councillor Mick Henry, chairman of the association, said: "The shiNE Awards will showcase how the region's local authorities and fire and rescue services make a positive difference to the citizens and communities they represent."
