AGREEMENTS have been put in place to save a North East Post Office which will move to a new location next month.

An announcement, which was made from the Post Office at the end of last week, revealed that Ushaw Moor Post Office would relocate from 1 Temperance Terrace (DH7 7PQ) to the former Ushaw Moor Convenience Store and current Go Local shop on 3 Broom Lane.

The move will allow the community to still access vital services and prevent a complete closure that will come to the detriment of residents.

It also comes as part of the modernisation of Post Office branches – and will allow the usual services to run alongside the retail operations of Go Local.

The opening hours of the relocated site will be Monday to Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday 8am-2pm. It will be closed on Sunday.

This will offer an additional ten hours of Post Office service a week including earlier opening and later closing for the convenience of customers.

The current branch will close today (February 14) at 5.30pm, with the new facility opening on March 15 at 1pm.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “Post Office has agreed to relocate Ushaw Moor Post Office to Go Local (formerly Ushaw Moor Convenience Store), 3 Broom Lane, Ushaw Moor, Durham, DH7 7LQ.

“The move is with the agreement of the current postmaster at 1 Temperance Terrace, Ushaw Moor, Durham, DH7 7PQ. This move would be part of the ongoing modernisation of our branch network.

“Ushaw Moor Post Office will be one of our local style branches with Post Office services offered alongside the retail counter.

The spokesperson added: “Introducing a local style branch alongside a successful retail store is the most effective way to safeguard sustainable Post Office services in the local community into the future.

“The new branch would be in a newly refurbished convenience store, now branded Go Local. It is in the main shopping parade in the centre of the village.

“Roadside parking is available along Broom Lane and in the surrounding area.”
