A MAN had an ear bitten almost off in an unprovoked street attack.

The 48-year-old victim was taken to The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, for treatment of his ear and injuries to his face and hand.

The man and a woman had been walking along Waveney Road, Redcar, and had reached its junction with Welland Road when they were approached by two males who attacked the man.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "For no apparent reason, an unprovoked attack took place. One of the suspects bit the man's ear, causing severe injuries. He carried out further attacks before he ran off with his companion."

The attack took place at 1.15am on New Year's Day, near Redcar Community College.

The ear-biter is described as white, aged 20 to 24, 5ft 8in, slim and with dark wavy hair.

He is said to have wide eyes and wore smart dark clothing.

His companion was not involved in the assault but is described as white, aged about 17, and between 5ft 3in and5ft 4in, with short light brown hair. He wore a white tracksuit top which appeared to be several sizes too big.
