COUNTY Durham MP Dehenna Davison has mocked the Daily Mirror for not “reading the room” after the tabloid newspaper approached the Bishop Auckland representative over an ‘unsolicited’ leaflet about anti-vaxxers and gay conversion therapy.

The Member of Parliament, a supporter of LGBT rights, took to her social media accounts over the weekend to poke fun at the national newspaper for their ‘questionable’ technique in bringing her to account.

Posting a video on Twitter on Saturday (January 15) afternoon, Ms Davison told her followers that she had been contacted by the Daily Mirror at the end of last week regarding a picture she’d taken at her constituency office.

The MP said she was asked about the contents of one leaflet, which reportedly went against the NHS and its vaccination roll-out, as well as supporting gay conversion therapy.

Responding to the approach from the Daily Mirror, Ms Davison said that she hadn’t sorted through the stack of post yet, while also claiming that the Mirror were “clutching at straws,” and strengthening her support for LGBT rights.

Speaking in the video posted over the weekend, the Bishop Auckland MP said: “I’ve come out of a meeting with GPs talking about pressure on surgeries to find an email from a Mirror journalist. This is a great example of clutching at straws.

“I took a picture in the constituency office last week to say I was back and returning to the office and they were saying that there were some leaflets, which was a pile of post that I hadn’t even sorted through yet, to say that there was one from an organisation that is believed to be anti-vax, for gay conversion therapy and a range of other unsavoury things that don’t align with my views.

“They asked whether I’m a regular subscriber, how often I receive this leaflet and do I support the views enclosed in the leaflet. I mean, read the room.

“I’m literally LGBT, I’ve campaigned against gay conversion therapy and if the Mirror wants to discredit me for receiving a piece of unsolicited mail I haven’t even sorted through, absolutely fair play to them.

“But you heard it here first from me, I’m absolutely not in favour of gay conversion therapy, and, frankly, given that everything that’s going on in the country, our journalists should have better things to do with their time.”
