STUDENTS and staff at the University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, can now tune into their own radio station.

UTRN (University of Teesside Radio Network), was launched yesterday, broadcasting from the School of Arts and Media's Aurora House.

It is being run on a threemonth trial, broadcasting live through the university's online network. Once the trial is over, UTRN could be made available to everyone, on the internet.

UTRN, which is primarily aimed at the university students, can also be heard in the Students' Union building.

Music and chat are broadcast 24 hours a day, with presenter-led shows from 10am to 6pm. Twenty volunteers have signed up as DJs.

Volunteers are trained to use the studio equipment and are taught broadcasting techniques. They can also gain a university certificate.

Patrick Davis, 21, of Norton, who is studying for a BA in television production, is among the presenting team.

He said: "It is a bit nervewracking going on air, but really good experience. I'm enjoying presenting, and learning about the technical side too."

Ange Ferguson, technical director of the school, said: "It's a new service, to encourage professional development and offer added experience to students."

Dominic Dunn, UTRN assistant producer, said: "The shows look at campus life, what's going on in the region and primarily music. There's a news update on the hour, with half-hourly information about events on campus and at the Students' Union."
