MEMBERS of a community menaced by yobs have been trying to erase some of the scars.

Led by Middlesbrough Council street wardens, local people - including youngsters - held a Transformation Day at Coulby Newham, near Middlesbrough, yesterday.

They concentrated on the local Baptist church, Langdon Square and the surrounding area, which has been blighted by litter and graffiti.

Street warden Clare Allen said: "Our aim is not just to improve the appearance of the area, but also to demonstrate to people, especially young people, the impact that litter, graffiti and vandalism have on their environment.

"We also hope that this project will help bring different sections of the community together."

The Reverend Andy Stone of the Coulby Newham Baptist Church said: "We, as the local church, are delighted to be part of this initiative. God is committed to transforming people's lives, and this includes the places they live.

"We believe that restoring our communities is possible if we work together, using the skills gifts we have all been given. We can make them into places where we all, young and old alike, can be included and valued."

Middlesborough ward councillor Jan Brunton said: "I think it's a great idea.

Getting young people involved is a practical solution that sends a positive message out to the community."

Focus DIY, at Coulby Newham, splashed out with donations of paint for yesterday's project.

The wardens plan to introduce hanging baskets and create garden areas for church members and other local people to enjoy, in the summer.
