TWO teenagers were recovering in hospital today after their car left a road, went down an embankment and ended on a rail line.

Although the car came to rest on the East Coast Main Line, near Cramlington station, north of Newcastle, no services were affected due to the time, late on Saturday.

Police have appealed for information from witnesses to the accident, on the A1172, near its junction with Crow Hall Lane, in Cramlington, Northumberland, at around 10pm.

The white Peugeot 205 was travelling eastwards on the A1172 when it left the road and collided with a fence, 50-metres west of the junction with Crow Hall Lane.

It went through the fence and continued down the embankment, coming to rest on the line, near the small station.

The driver and passenger, both 19 and from Cramlington, were able to get out of the car, but were taken to Wansbeck General Hospital, suffering what were described as, "none-life threatening" injuries.

They were both detained for observation.

A recovery crane was called in to remove the car, and the last of the debris was finally removed from the track by around 12.50am yesterday.

The line was checked for damage and was cleared to be reopened by 1.30am.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said it was fortunate there were no scheduled services on that stretch of line at the time of the accident.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to contact Northumbria Police's motor patrols unit, at Blyth, on (08456) 043043, extension 61972.
