A FORMER land girl who survived Covid at the age of 99 has celebrated her 100th birthday with a dance with her son.

Isabel Jameson, from Darlington, celebrated the landmark birthday on December 11 at The Gardens nursing home in Ponfield Close.

John Jameson, her only son, said: “How many sons can say they got to dance with their mam on their 100th birthday? It was fantastic.

"She had a really good day. All the staff made a big fuss of her.”

He added: “She got Covid when she was 99 and it was 50/50 whether she was going to make it but thanks to the staff she did.

"I’d like to thank all of them. It’s a really nice atmosphere there, they’re always laughing and happy.”

She has lived at the home for about three years after moving from Sir ED Walker homes in Coniscliffe Road.

The eldest of a family of nine, she has outlived all of her siblings.

Originally from Sunderland, she moved to Darlington with her husband Les after they married following the war.

She had made bombs in Sunderland, before joining the Land Army and meeting Les, who was a farmer at Dinsdale.

The keen dancer later worked as an assistant cook at Firthmoor infant school in Darlington.
