A MAN died in a crash on the A66 last night, police have today confirmed.

Durham Police said the victim, who has not been named, passed away at the scene of the collision late last night.

A woman who was driving a second vehicle involved in the crash, near Barnard Castle, suffered serious injuries.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a collision on the A66 at Rokeby Grange at around 10pm last night (December 14).

"Sadly, the male driver was confirmed dead at the scene.

"The other female driver was taken to James Cook University Hospital with serious injuries.

"The road was closed for several hours while an investigation was carried out.

"Formal identification has yet to take place."
