TOWNSFOLK can learn more about an extensive planned improvement programme for a County Durham shopping area at information sharing events.

Following successful projects in Victoria Road, Wesley Street and Front Street in Consett, Durham County Council announced earlier this year it is now to focus on Middle Street where more than £1million worth of improvements are due to start early in 2022.

It is part of the council’s ambitious Town and Villages Regeneration Strategy, which aims to enhance the vibrancy of communities across the county, while supporting their recovery from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

A new outdoor events space in Middle Street will allow the community to host festivals, street art performances and markets.

Additional lighting is being installed to support events, including snowflakes for a Christmas light display.

The council states that as part of its ongoing commitment to tackling climate change, existing streetlamps will also be replaced with energy efficient LED lighting.

A solar bench has also been commissioned using recycled plastic, which will feature solar-powered phone chargers, while visitors will be able to access free Wi-Fi in the town from early next year.

Ahead of improvement work beginning, two information sessions are being held for anyone who would like to discuss the proposals with council project officers as well as to view designs and engineering drawings.

Both are at Consett Library, in Victoria Road, with the first taking place today (Friday December 3), from 10am to 1pm, and the second on Tuesday (December 7), from 2pm to 5pm.

There is no need for visitors to book in advance.

Those attending are asked to wear face coverings once inside the library in line with the latest Government coronavirus guidance.

Councillor Elizabeth Scott, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “The upcoming works are integral to our plans to regenerate Consett, enhancing its reputation as a local shopping destination, helping the existing retailers there to thrive and also creating new jobs in the process.

“The scheme is very much in line with our Towns and Villages Strategy and also addresses issues relating to climate change which is one of our priorities as a council.

“I’d encourage anyone interested in finding out more about the work to attend one of the information sessions and speak to our staff on what the improvements have in store for Consett.”

Those unable to attend the information events but who would like further information about the improvement works can contact the council’s CED Team by emailing CED@durham.gov.uk and an officer will contact them via phone or Teams.
