THIS week it emerged that a Teesside train station is still one of the least used in the UK.

Teesside Airport Train Station had two passengers pass through it in the last 12 months compared to 338 in 2019 to 2020.

From 2019 to 2020 it only welcomed one train a week in one direction.

And this is still the case today, according to Northern Rail timetables the only train which stops at the station is on a Sunday at 2.56pm - this does not coincide with any flights.

This week, we tracked down the man who made the only two trips to the train station last year.

Paul Lucas, a travel vlogger from London said he used the station for 'novelty value' and that a normal person would find the service 'inconvienent'.

He also explained why only one train stops at the station a week.

He said: "The train is not convenient, there's only one train a week. The only reason that it runs is to legally keep the station open so, if the train company doesn't run any services at all to Teesside Airport for a certain length of time, legally they have to go through a closure process, which is really expensive to close a station.

"So, instead they just stop one train there a week and they try to make that train as inconvenient as possible. So it's only on a Sunday that you can arrive at Teesside Airport in the middle of the day.

"The train company is only running the service to keep the station open to avoid a cost because it legally has to go into consultation to close the station if it doesn't serve it. So it is convoluted it is inconvenient the service is not designed to connect with anything else. So, if you want to go to Teesside Airport by train it's something you have to think about and plan in advance.

"And you'll also be unlikely going there to take a flight because the train doesn't coincide with any of the flight times at Teesside."

Paul said the station is run-down and the footbridge is closed because it was deemed unsafe for the public to use.

This means only one platform is open and can be used.
