DARLINGTON Borough Council is supporting an international campaign aimed at tackling domestic abuse.

The council is backing the 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence, which runs from 25 November to 10 December.

The council says one in four women and one in seven men will experience domestic abuse in their lives.

The council stresses the importantance that every member of the community knows what domestic abuse is and how to access support. 

Services can be accessed by everyone.

A programme of events is planned to take place across Darlington during the 16 Days of Action.

These include events run by the council, partner organisations and charities.

Most events are available virtually however some will take place in the community.

On Thursday November 25, Family Help refuge and Darlington Soroptimists will be setting up stalls in the indoor market, Dolphin Centre and Cornmill Centre, marking the start of the 16 Days of Action.

This campaign is just one part of a bigger awareness-raising programme being run by the council across Darlington. 

The aim of the campaign is to highlight domestic abuse and tackle it as a community.

Councillor Jonathan Dulston, Deputy Leader of Darlington Borough Council, said: “Domestic abuse can happen to anyone and there are many different forms of abuse, whether that is physical, sexual, emotional, financial, psychological or cultural.

“Abuse is never okay and the person being abused is never to blame.

"I am proud that this council promoting the 16 Days of Action to shine a spotlight on this important issue."
