THREE year 10 students from St. Francis Xavier School, Richmond, have this month signed a two year contract with professional rugby league club Newcastle Thunder.

Seth Clapham, Noah Bangura and Harry King will be part of the academy team which has a superb reputation for developing academy players through into the first team in later years.

“It’s a huge achievement to have one student signed with a pro rugby league club but to have three students, and all from the same year group is unbelievable.

These three boys are outstanding players who form a key part of the school's rugby team, which are area champions in year 10 and 11,” said Mr Marley, head of boys PE.

Harry said that when he was told the news, “I was overjoyed, I couldn’t stop smiling!”.

Noah said he was “buzzing” to be told he would be joining the Academy.

Headteacher, Mr Mcghee recognises how important sport is for young people.

He said: "This is an outstanding achievement by the three pupils.

A credit to them, their coaches and their rugby teacher at school, Mr Lowe.

"We are extremely proud of them here at St Francis Xavier School, and the achievements of the school rugby team who are area champions in Year 10 and Year 11.

"Sport has always been a big part of our school, and after the restrictions the pandemic put on the lives of young people is more important than ever. "

The boys have now started their training twice a week at Newcastle and Seth has said that he is really looking forward to the first game in March.

The school is now looking forward to following Noah, Harry and Seth's progress.
