BENSONS for Beds has opened a new distribution hub in Tursdale, County Durham, to provide 'last mile' delivery to customers in the North East.

The new location, just south of Durham, close to the A1(M) has 24 colleagues and a fleet of 11 vehicles to provide deliveries from North Yorkshire to Northumberland and Cumbria.

It follows Bensons’ decision to bring its delivery service in the region in-house, to increase its profile and give it more control over delivery.

As part of the move, six colleagues transferred from its previous delivery provider, alongside 18 new recruits.

Spokesman Chris McMillan said: “We’re delighted to welcome new colleagues and those who chose to transfer and join the Bensons team.

“The new service has got off to a great start and we look forward to developing the service over the coming months and years.”

Bensons has a major distribution centres at Huncoat in Lancashire, Ayr in Scotland and Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.

It sells a range of beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture across more than 170 stores and online. Headquartered in Accrington, Lancashire, it also has a dedicated manufacturing site in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

It was originally founded as a general store by Cyril Benson in 1950, and launched its first bed centre in 1972.

In 2011, the new business was launched, which merged the Bensons for Beds, Sleepmasters and Bed Shed brands.

It recently introduced a recycling scheme for old beds and mattresses and has since saved the equivalent of more than 4,000 tonnes of mattresses from going into landfill.
