FIREFIGHTERS continue to tackle a fire at a Teesport power station for a second day.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the MGT biomass site early on Monday morning, with work ongoing to extinguish the blaze.

Nitrogen is still being injected into the silo and operators will shortly begin removing biomass.

A spokeswoman said: "There is an ongoing incident with smouldering fuel in one silo at the Tees Renewable Energy Plant.

"Operators are still applying nitrogen to inert the silo and Cleveland Fire Brigade are onsite assisting the operational team to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible. There are no injuries.

"The site will remain closed for general operations until the work has been completed."

A statement from PD Ports, the site operator, said: "Whilst the earlier reported incident at MGT is still ongoing, the Port remains operational.

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed one fire engine was still at the scene.

A statement read: "We were called at 3.02am on Tuesday, November 15, to an incident at Tees Rep Biomass Power Station, Tees Dock Road in Grangetown.

"One fire engine is still in attendance and a multi-agency group has been conveyed to monitor the situation and deal with the incident."
